«Cancer - Educate to Prevent» project arises from the need to design and validate effective and comprehensive new strategies in the area of ​​cancer prevention.
The project was focused on training teachers, providing them with skills to implement campaigns on the prevention of cancer. After the training, the 54 teachers involved in the project, promoted cancer prevention campaigns at their school communities, covering a total number of 42 schools in the Northern and Central regions of the country, encompassing a universe of over 5,000 students.                      

O projeto «Cancro - Educar para Prevenir» surge da necessidade de conceber e validar novas estratégias, mais eficazes e abrangentes, na área da prevenção do cancro.

O projeto foi centrado na formação de professores, proporcionando-lhes competências para implementarem campanhas na área da prevenção de cancro. Os 54 professores envolvidos no projeto, após a formação, dinamizaram campanhas de prevenção do cancro junto das suas comunidades escolares, abrangendo um total de 42 escolas das regiões Norte e Centro do país, envolvendo um universo de mais de 5.000 alunos.

A novel antiproliferative agent bis-4-hydroxycoumarin-type compound have been designed and prepared by two alternative synthetic methods. We have rationalized the concept of a biologically active molecule built from inactive constructive fragments. We demonstrated that the new compound inhibits proliferation of K-562 and JUKAT leukaemia cell lines associated to an accumulation of cells in G0/G1 phase of cell cycle without affecting the viability of healthy peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs).

Um novo agente anti-proliferativo do tipo bis-4-hidroxicumarina foi desenhado e preparado por dois métodos de síntese alternativos. Com este processo de síntese efetuou-se a racionalização do conceito de construção de uma molécula biologicamente ativa a partir de fragmentos que não apresentaram qualquer tipo de atividade. Demonstrou-se que o novo composto inibe a proliferação de linhas celulares leucémicas K-562 and JUKAT associadas a uma acumulação de células na fase G0/G1 do ciclo celular, sem afectar a viabilidade das células mononucleares periféricas do dadores saudáveis.
